IFCC joins Sant Antoni Town Hall to promote healthy lifestyles on World No Tobacco Day

This morning, the association set up an information stand on the Paseo de ses Fonts to raise awareness about the harmful effects of smoking and vaping

The Ibiza and Formentera Against Cancer Association (IFCC) installed an information stand this morning to raise awareness about the harmful effects of tobacco and vaping, in an event promoted by the Sant Antoni de Portmany Town Hall for World No Tobacco Day, celebrated today, 31 May.

This initiative, aimed at “promoting healthy lifestyles among the citizens of the municipality,” according to the Town Hall, began at 10:00 am with a one and a half hour health walk that ended at the Paseo de ses Fonts.

IFCC - World No Tobacco Day

Following this, a group of IFCC volunteers distributed informative leaflets among visitors and residents of the municipality to “prevent smoking, debunk the perceived safety of vaping and inform about the potential short- and long-term effects on both health and the environment.” “Our goal is not to scare people about the effects of vaping, but to raise awareness, inform, and impact young people so they do not think it is harmless,” highlighted Xaquelina Perry, president of the IFCC, an association that since last month has been organising a series of talks titled ‘Myths and truths about vaping’ for students in various secondary schools in Ibiza.

During this event, the volunteers also emphasised the need for the population to undergo colon cancer screening to prevent this disease, which affects “one in four people worldwide.”

“The annual celebration of this day, promoted by the World Health Organization, is a crucial opportunity to protect future generations and highlight the health dangers posed by tobacco and vaping,” said Jorge Nacher, Councillor for Youth, Social Welfare, Equality, and Citizen Participation at the Sant Antoni de Portmany Town Hall.

The Town Hall pointed out that the activities carried out during this event represent a joint effort to “improve the quality of life of the Ibizan population and reduce the prevalence of smoking,” considered by the health community to be the leading preventable epidemic.

The Sant Antoni Town Council joins World No Tobacco Day (31st May) with a day of activities

The Sant Antoni de Portmany Town Council is supporting the World No Tobacco Day initiative, promoted by the World Health Organization since 1988 to combat smoking. On Friday, 31st May, in collaboration with the Ibiza and Formentera Against Cancer Association (IFCC), a series of morning activities will be held to encourage healthy lifestyle habits and improve the quality of life for local residents.

At 10 am, everyone is invited to join an open bio-healthy walk, starting from Sa Punta des Molí, along the coast to es caló des Moro, and finishing at the Passeig de ses Fonts. At this point, participants will be offered a fruit and water stop, provided by the Municipal Drugs Plan. Additionally, the Ibiza and Formentera Against Cancer Association (IFCC) will set up an information table to raise awareness about the harmful effects of tobacco and the use of e-cigarettes.

The annual celebration of this day is an opportunity to protect future generations and highlight the health risks associated with tobacco use, considered the main preventable epidemic by the health community. Therefore, the Sant Antoni de Portmany Town Council invites the public to join in this day to promote a healthier, smoke-free life.

Charla educativa sobre riesgos del vapeo - IFCC

Ibiza y Formentera Against Cancer warns young people about the risks of vaping through educational talks

Students from the Isidor Macabich and Algarb institutes were the first to participate in this initiative, highlighting the health and environmental risks of using these devices

In a pioneering initiative to raise awareness about the dangers associated with vaping, the Ibiza y Formentera Against Cancer Association (IFCC) has begun delivering a series of educational talks titled “Truths and Myths About Vaping” to students at various Secondary Education Centres in Ibiza. These preventative workshops kicked off this morning with students from Year 13 and Year 10 at Isidor Macabich Institute, and two Year 12 classes at Algarb Institute, both located in Ibiza.

The sessions, led by Xaqueline Perry, president of IFCC, and Berno Kiberd, vice-president, focused on debunking the perceived safety of using vapes and informing about the potential short and long-term effects on health and the environment. “Our goal is not to frighten about the effects of vaping but to raise awareness, inform, and make an impact on young people so they do not think it is harmless,” Perry emphasised.

Educational talk on the risks of vaping - IFCC

During the talks, the IFCC representatives presented alarming data showing that, although vaping is often marketed as a safer alternative to smoking, it actually “carries significant health risks.” “80% of current lung cancer cases are linked to smoking tobacco, and it is estimated that, in the future, the same percentage of cases will be linked to vaping,” the local NGO warned.

IFCC also highlighted the environmental impact of regular vaping device use, as “they cannot be recycled due to the toxins they contain.” “These devices have an estimated degradation time of about a thousand years,” they underscored, reminding that, currently, “we are aware of the effects of tobacco and cigarette butts because we are familiar with their consequences, however, the effects of vaping are still unknown and we must remain vigilant.” “Vaping is following a similar path to tobacco, and we don’t need to wait a decade to realise it’s harmful to our health; the current evidence is already sufficient,” Berno Kiberd noted.

Educational talk on the risks of vaping - IFCC

IFCC also pointed out that the marketing behind vaping often “hides these risks and manipulates,” especially targeting young people, presenting vaping as “a ‘cool’ option,” in the same way it was once done with tobacco, and they warned about the high price of these devices, suggesting that the money could be better spent on “travel, clothes, or hobbies, instead of on harmful substances.”

The main goal of Ibiza y Formentera Against Cancer (IFCC) is to continue these educational talks about the risks of vaping in all schools in Ibiza, and they invite schools interested in participating in this initiative to contact the Association to “extend the reach” of their preventive message and “raise awareness among the younger population.”

A walk of moderate difficulty and straightforward that will start at 10:30 am from the church of this urban nucleus, covering a total distance of 8.5 kilometres, and is expected to last 3 hours. “In our quest to organise routes that allow us to explore all the municipalities of our island, we wanted to include this easy and flat walk towards the North of Santa Gertrudis, where the first two kilometres will be on asphalt road, hence we will be particularly cautious with traffic, before moving into the countryside,” revealed the president of IFCC, Xaquelina Ana Perry.

“It is worth noting that Santa Gertrudis is one of the most beautiful and fertile urban centres on the island and that towards the end of this walk, we will pass through the dry riverbed of the Rio de Santa Eulalia, before circling back to our starting point, in what promises to be a unique experience,” specified the president of this NGO.
